The sleep problems that my clients have are usually caused by what I sometimes call “overloaded mind syndrome.” They can’t fall asleep because their thoughts are still in overdrive from their busy day. Or worse, their worries and concerns are endlessly cycling through their minds.
I personally use Peace & Calming for this kind of problem. In fact, I love it so much I use it almost every night because I sleep so much more deeply.
Valerian is another favorite of mine. The German Commission E (an official German government agency that evaluates medicinal herbs) considers valerian to be safe and effective for sleeplessness and restlessness caused by the usual stress related symptoms and conditions of nervousness, tension, insomnia, and migraine.
All of my herbal references list valerian as a powerful nervine which means it helps with the nervous system – including helping us relax!
Tranquil Roll-on can be used as well. I heard from one woman that she makes sure her elderly mother who suffers from anxiety has it with her at all times. It helps her relax and calm down. If you’re sleep problems stem more from the worries and concerns of your life, you might want to try it during the day as well as before and while you’re sleeping.
And, of course, there’s the traditional sleep aid, Lavender. It doesn’t help me personally (I use it for bug bites!), but plenty of people swear by it for sleep.
Everyone has a slightly different physical and chemical makeup, so we all response to natural sleep remedies differently. Try the one that seems to relate to the source of your sleep problems for awhile and then consider adding another.
The key to selecting natural sleeping remedies is to understand what the problem really is. If you’ve tried the basics like Peace & Calming, Valerian, Tranquil Roll-on and Lavender and you’re still having sleep problems, talk with your doctor about tests for sleep apnea or other possible sleep disorders. And yes, there are essential oils that can help with those as well!
